A Band of Light Enveloping Diverse Activities
The main facility of this extension project is a gymnasium designed to accommodate both sports and events such as ceremonies and concerts. Large openings on the north and south sides are fitted with polycarbonate panels to ensure both light permeability and safety in the event of impact. Above them, the upper walls are staggered in an alternating pattern, with glass windows inserted in the gaps. This allows for an open, impact-safe environment where students can freely enjoy ball games, while during performances, the staggered walls and sound-absorbing ceiling surfaces help create an acoustically comfortable setting.
Natural light filtering through the gaps between the offset walls softly envelops the interior during the day, and at night, light from inside gently shines through like a glowing lantern, illuminating the surrounding streetscape.
We hope that this band of light, embracing a variety of activities, will become a new and vibrant feature of the Makuhari New City landscape.
