Toyo Care Facility

CAnSusumu Uno

Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, a designated support facility for people with disabilities was relocated from Tomioka Town in Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture, to Tamura City in the same prefecture. It was newly constructed as an emergency temporary facility. The building is a large single-story wooden house, accommodating a total of 54 residents—33 men and 21 women—living together.

The floor plan follows a unit-style layout, with approximately 10 people per unit. This design allows residents to select spaces that match their individual lifestyles, ranging from highly private rooms to more public areas. The gradual transition from private rooms to common living spaces fosters both a sense of personal calm and a communal atmosphere, making the facility feel like "everyone’s home."

The architecture emphasizes the use of local materials and features large windows that bring natural light and ventilation into the central living areas surrounded by private rooms, creating a bright and comfortable environment. A spacious work-training room, constructed without interior columns using wooden trusses, is located at the heart of the building. A walking-training corridor runs alongside it. When the sliding doors are opened, this space integrates seamlessly with the adjacent dining room, creating a symbolic communal gathering area.

Each unit includes resident rooms with two distinct zones: a walled area for relaxation and a more open section for social interaction. This layout ensures a degree of privacy even when doors are open, whether the room is shared or private. Sliding glass doors connect various gardens and living areas, linking indoor and outdoor spaces. This design encourages a gentle, nature-connected lifestyle where residents can enjoy the changing seasons.
